Kitchens, the new social space
It’s the heart of every household and a place for family get-togethers: this space is thought of as one of the most important nowadays.
The evolution of the kitchen as an architectural space speaks of how families have transformed over the past years. Not long ago it was only looked upon as an exclusive space for women, today it is spoken of as a room to cook, eat and share more than just a mere food space.
Tracing back history in the late 40s’, with the so-called American “lab kitchens”, they began to earn a more important place in the house. With decreasingly less domestic help, it became the new environment for full time mothers. These kitchens gave more importance to functionality: electric appliances, furniture that occupied the walls, a big refrigerator and a table to host all family meals.
In our medium, apartment buildings underwent serious remodeling since they were built on different foundations where kitchens were looked upon as second hand spaces. Usually near shadowy, ventilated areas they were often made with the left over space in the house.
Nowadays, in new buildings and horizontal style apartments and duplexes this space is revalued by integrating it to the main areas in the house with more space, light and style, being a critical point in sales.
The new kitchen image is informal, cozy and close to the concept of being the heart of the family. Furniture acquires a more stylish and trendy fashion, following the same architectural concept with more compact lines. The walls are painted more like bedrooms without the need to cover them up and the faucets and sinks are wider in order to accommodate electric appliances.
